Button Men Online wins Best Play-by-Mail Game Award
The Academy of Adventure Gaming Arts and Design (www.aagad.org)
has given the Origins Award for Best Play-by-Mail game to
Button Men Online, the Button Men Web game.
Designed by Dana Huyler and Loren Peace, the Button Men Web game is a faithful adaptation of the dice game Button Men, which won the Origins Awards for Best Abstract Board Game and Best Graphic Presentation of a Board Game in 1999. Running since April 2001, Button Men Online has logged more than 170,000 individual games between hundreds of regular users.
Button Men is a fast-playing dice game that uses pin-back buttons and several polyhedral dice. Players take turns rolling dice and capturing each other's dice, in a game that requires an understanding of statistics and probability, as well as a little bit of luck. It's a simple game with nearly infinite variation, as demonstrated by the hundreds of unique characters to be found online.
Cheapass Games is a small game company in Seattle, specializing in low-cost board and card games. Cheapass Games and lead designer James Ernest have been nominated for a total of 25 Origins Awards, winning 9. You can play Button Men Online simply by setting up an account at www.buttonmen.com.
